A PHOTOTRIP TO JEAN TALON MARKET

(ENG) When you move to another city to live, the central market should be one of the first things to discover. Especially if you want fresh, new, diverse food on your table. You go to the market to choose the best, to inhale the spirit of the city, to explore, to communicate, to negotiate, to smell and to finally understand what kind of products or moments could make you wish to come back here.

Jean Talon Market, located in the heart of Montreal, is a place I had kept for the dessert, I mean for some later-to-come  “good times”.

Suddenly this good time came. And that long, sunny, free Sunday afternoon offered me the chance to visit this legendary place. I turned off the housekeeper and turned on the gourmand in me. So it was a real trip of tastes.

At the very beginning, on the left as well as on the right side of the entrance, you can choose your first snack: meat or seafood. I ignored les saucissons, despite a very nice boy,  inviting me with a smile.

I turned left and the paradise of seafood lovers made my mouth water.

Here they also offer a delicious, warm and very unhealthy snack: fried squids, or fried shrimp or fried little fish.

But i decided, as usual, to keep that for the dessert. Especially as i saw another delicacy : fresh oysters. Starting behaving like a cat around the mouse, my eyes turned into big oysters and the tiny voice inside me couldn’t say NO.

The atmosphere of Jean Talon is of an open air gourmet supermarket. It is a place for those who know and understand that food is not only a need. First, it is a joy and pleasure.

I told you already about oysters, did I?  But what about macarons?  They also had Pastel de Nata – a Portuguese traditional dessert, bu we ate it so fast that I didn’t even have time to take a picture.

I liked not only the variety of vegetables and the way they are exposed, but also the sellers. One of them was ready to become a model for half of minute.

Did you know how Brussels cabbage grows? No, they don’t collect it as cherries from a tree.

One of the things I will write soon about Montreal is Top Places where you can fill your stomach for free. Jean Talon Market is one of them. And I adore that!  The fruits, freshly sliced and arranged on high plates are a delicious collation (a french  word for “snack” i learned from my kids).

It’s apples season! Coming from Moldova, an agricultural country, where we have a lot of types of apples,  I couldn’t believe there are even more types. Unfortunately, the seller was not very happy when I started to touch and smell them. But how, otherwise, would I be able to choose from such an ocean of apples?

Cranberries. I have never seen them fresh before. I didn’t know how  they look and taste, being just picked up from the bush. But a thing I know for sure about cranberries, is that they do a real good to kidneys. That is why, despite their sour taste, I eat them frequently. And also, I use them for an onion confiture recipe, served with cheeses.

Another surprise for me, as an experienced mushroom hunter, was to find at Jean Talon Market this stand. They sell lots of wild mushrooms, collected from a big piece of land in a forest, managed by this company. The owner told me that in Canada, there are 45 types of registered eatable mushrooms. And here, you can taste some of that 45 types for free.

I don’t know who buys this, but i found it curious. Tens of cans of cold vegetables soups.

I like when you can find on the same market everything you like. Fresh juices mixed with fresh flowers, vintage clothes, nice glasses and farm cheese. That is why my favorite is Albert Cuyp Market in Amsterdam.

Jean Talon is a market for gourmands, for taste hunters. But flowers, from the most exotic to the typical ones, but expensive, you can find on Jean Talon.

Here is one of the places i liked mostly at Jean Talon.  Soaps, lavender bouquets, oils, scrubs and a feeling o SPA somewhere around.

And, as i promised me and you, my final dessert. Don’t ask me about the prices. A gourmand doesn’t spend much, but qualitatively.

V-am spus deja despre stridii , nu-i așa ?
